Victorinox Swiss Army Knife

The Victorinox Swiss Army Knife is the original swiss army knife.  Victorinox was founded in 1884 by Karl Elsner in Ilbach-Schwyz, Switzerland.  Karl chose the name Victorinox for his company after his mother, Victoria died.  "Inox" was the term used to refer to stainless steel, based on the french term acier inoxydable.  Stainless steel is used to make the blades of Swiss Army knives.

In 1891 Karl started supplying the Swiss Army with his knives and in 1897 he patented the Swiss Officer's knife and the Sports Knife.  Originally Victorinox was the only supplier of Swiss Army knives to the Swiss military.  After 17 years Karl had to share the contract with Wenger.  Swiss Army knives by Victorinox come with a limited lifetime warranty.  Today Victorinox owns Wenger.
